Challenging the Status Quo: 62 Life Lessons from a Woman Who’s Still Learning

Status Quo

Let’s talk about the status quo — that fancy phrase for “the way things have always been.”

Because honestly, who decided “the way things are” was good enough?

As mothers, wives, and working women, we live in a world that expects us to hold it all together while smiling through chaos. And sometimes, the only way to survive is to question everything — to challenge the script, rewrite the story, and learn from every glorious, messy, life-changing lesson along the way.

So here are 62 life lessons I’ve learned (and keep relearning) as a woman doing her best to balance it all — faith, family, finances, and the occasional meltdown in the car.

SPIRITUALITY: THE GROWN-WOMAN EDITION

  1. You never fail — you just keep retaking the test until the lesson finally sticks.

  2. Spiritual growth isn’t a one-day event; it’s a lifelong group project between you and God.

  3. Faith is personal. No one can live it for you.

  4. You can love God and still struggle to live a victorious life — it’s called being human.

  5. Sitting in church doesn’t make you spiritual any more than sitting in a garage makes you a car.

  6. Faith without action is like a Wi-Fi signal without data — pointless.

  7. The government and your boss can’t save you. Only purpose can.

  8. Good and evil both exist — pretending otherwise won’t make it go away.

  9. Not every “spiritual” person acts spiritually. Don’t let that confuse your connection to God.

  10. Forgiveness sets you free, not the person who hurt you.

  11. Don’t give your money to any place of worship that doesn’t help its community. Faith should serve people, not just fill offering baskets.

PERSONAL: LIFE IS A WHOLE MOOD

  1. Gratitude changes everything. Even bad days have hidden blessings.

  2. Life isn’t fair — but that doesn’t mean it can’t still be beautiful.

  3. Self-doubt is a liar in cute shoes. Don’t listen to her.

  4. You can’t control life, but you can control your reaction.

  5. It’s never too late to start over — even on a Wednesday.

  6. It’s okay to be afraid; just don’t let fear drive the car.

  7. You’ll never have all the answers. That’s why Google and prayer exist.

  8. There’s no other you on this planet — so stop auditioning for someone else’s role.

  9. Perfection is a scam. Progress is the real flex.

  10. Minding your business is a spiritual gift. Use it often.

  11. It’s easier to see other people’s truth than to face your own. Be brave enough to do both.

  12. Stop keeping up with the Joneses. They’re broke too — just better at posing.

  13. Not everyone will support you. Some will watch quietly — that’s okay. Do it anyway.

  14. You can’t please everyone. Even Beyoncé gets criticized.

  15. Everyone will have an opinion on your life. Live it your way — YOLO, mama.

  16. Que sera sera — what will be, will be. Worrying won’t change it.

  17. Karma doesn’t miss. Ever.

  18. Success looks different for everyone — define yours.

  19. Success takes consistency, not perfection.

  20. You’ll never feel “ready.” Start anyway. Marry him, launch it, book the flight.

  21. Choices come with consequences — pick wisely.

  22. Life needs a plan, even if it never goes according to plan.

  23. If you don’t design your own life, someone else will hire you to build theirs.

  24. Want to know your future? Look at your parents’ patterns. Repeat what works. Break what doesn’t.

RELATIONSHIPS: THE LOVE, THE LESSONS, AND THE LETTING GO

  1. Your parents aren’t psychic — they’re just human with opinions (and trauma).

  2. Treat people kindly; we’re all riding the same train to the same destination.

  3. Real people are rare — when you find them, hold them close.

  4. Good friends are worth more than money.

  5. The best romantic relationships start as strong friendships.

  6. Your world shouldn’t revolve around anyone. You are the center of your own universe.

  7. You can’t control people, only your response to them.

  8. Not every friendship or relationship is meant to last — let go when it’s time.

  9. Never judge a book by its cover. People are fighting battles you can’t see.

  10. Don’t punish the world for the mistakes of a few.

  11. Not everyone sees life the way you do — and that’s okay.

  12. Diversity in thought, race, and belief is a gift — not a threat.

  13. Everyone in your life has a role: some lift you up, some hold you down. Learn the difference.

  14. Criticism drains. Compliments heal. Choose your words wisely.

  15. People make time and spend money on what they value — pay attention to that.

EDUCATION: LEARNING NEVER STOPS

  1. Education is freedom — but wisdom is power.

  2. You’ll never stop learning. Stay curious.

  3. Life lessons > exam grades. Always.

MONEY & CAREER: ADULTING WITH A PAYCHECK

  1. You can be anything you want to be — not just the “respectable” jobs your aunties approve of.

  2. Money isn’t evil. The love of it is.

  3. And no, money does not grow on trees (but wouldn’t that be nice?).

  4. A big paycheck doesn’t mean you understand money.

  5. You don’t have to live life on the hamster wheel — there are other ways to earn and thrive.

  6. The myth: work, save, retire, then live. The truth: life is happening right now. Enjoy it.

  7. Your boss isn’t your best friend. Stay professional and protect your peace.

  8. Your school report card doesn’t matter anymore — your financial report card does.

  9. The bank will never go broke. Why? They literally print their own money.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Every lesson I’ve learned has come wrapped in joy, pain, or chaos — sometimes all three. But every single one has shaped me into the woman I am today: a mother who’s learning balance, a wife learning patience, a woman learning peace.

So challenge the status quo. Question the “supposed to’s.” Rewrite the rules that no longer serve you.

Because at the end of the day, this life — this beautiful, exhausting, hilarious life — is your classroom.
And every day you wake up, you get to learn again.
